A NEW EXHIBITION: SKIN

"Skin has become inadequate in interfacing with reality. Technology has become the body's new membrane of existence"- Nam June Paik

Nam Jun Paik’s statement above resonates within modern society, as our everyday experiences are more than ever infiltrated by the use of technology. It has become part of the cityscape to see people taking out phones and cameras to record anything and everything they see and hear. They can show these videos and photographs on the Internet, turning an individual experience into a mass experience. With such technological devices that are already deeply embedded in our daily practices, it is undeniable that it has changed our perception of ‘reality’ and ‘identity.’ But what are the consequences of such change? Are we becoming desensitized to ‘real’ experiences? Are we forgetting the value of in-person experiences as we automatically assume the accessibility of those through digital documentations? Is it positive or negative to experience things and people through technology? Or is it neither?

Nam June Paik's prophetic quote has become an unavoidable truth in modern culture. The means of experiencing personal interaction, celebrity, and nature has changed drastically since the start of the Internet age. But rather than regressing or denying this truth, we embrace our new interfaces and explore the possibilities that comes with them. Delving into areas of environment, identity, the internet, and pop culture, we celebrate our SKIN. Exploring our experiences mediated through technology, the internet, and how this affects how we perceive identity, environment, time, and memory.

PINS FOR PAULY BOWL-A-THON

A LETTER TO YOU

TO ALL SUPPORTERS, MEMBERS,
PARTICIPANTS; PAULY'S FAMILY,

I cannot find the proper words to express my gratitude and thanks to all your support. Support from an entirely new group of people I get the chance to call family. I have been humbled entirely by the positivity and fore-coming wishes. Every single person that stood within that bowling rink as I gave me a powerful strength I found overwhelmingly amazing. We need each other and I have been extremely blessed to have been brought to such a giving and positive group of people, brought together by the life of a boy names Pauly. Sickness or disease has only brought this community closer and stronger. Pauly left his legacy upon this earth and continues to better the lives of others. My faith has been a crucial part of my healing I believe. Those who meet with me in that faith give me power as they have kindly done this past weekend at the Pins for Pauly Bowl-a-Thon. Great thanks to Pauly and Pauly's family, filling the bowling alley entirely. There is great power here. I am thankful to have experienced it head on.

All the best to Pauly, his legacy and his ability to bring me to a new group of extended family members.

Love, positivity, power and faith,
Nicki Muller

GIFT OF TIME
NYU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE  STUDENT ORGANIZATION
An Evening with Nicki Muller
Thursday March 15, 2012, 6:30 PM

Gifts of Time is teaming up with The Painting Club to host a painting activity for students with Nicki Muller, a 21-year-old patient at NYU. When Nicki was a young girl, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Since then, she has used art and writing to explore her emotions and her experience with cancer. Last fall, Nicki's exhibit, "Bone to Brain," was featured in the NYU Medical Science Building (MSB) Gallery.

This year, Nicki was diagnosed with a high grade glioma (a brain tumor), for which she is currently undergoing chemotherapy. She continues to document her experience on her website.

Nicki is a pediatric and brain cancer awareness advocate. She has graciously accepted our invitation to speak with medical students about her battle with cancer and to then paint with us.

Paint and canvases will be provided, and the activity will center around the theme of expressing pain and illness through art.

After the activity, there will be a contest for the three best paintings. Submissions will be judged by Nicki, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
